Building on the foundational skills learned in Level I, Level II delves deeper into managing high-risk situations and understanding the legal safeguards available to first responders.

This course provides an in-depth exploration of common psychiatric emergencies, enhancing responders’ ability to navigate complex behavioral health crises with confidence. Participants will also learn to integrate IAFF’s behavioral health peer support resources into their personal mental healthcare and their co-workers .

Additionally, the course addresses defensive documentation techniques, empowering responders to craft clear and effective narratives that support their legal defense. Special attention is given to female-specific safety strategies in the EMS environment.

The course culminates in technique chaining exercises and scenario-based drills, designed to reinforce muscle memory and ensure seamless execution of de-escalation and restraint techniques in the field.

Course Objectives:
1.  Review concepts for scene safety.
2.  Review alternative plans for patients to avoid a violent encounter.
3. In-depth coverage of the most common mental health disorders and how to respond appropriately.
4. In-depth coverage of defensive documentation for violent encounters.
5.  Establish special consideration for EMS mental health.
6.  Establish special consideration for de-escalation techniques and hands-on techniques for females in Fire and EMS.

Student prerequisites:
Must have completed the Violent Encounter Survival Training (V.E.S.T.) Firefighter and EMS Edition, Level I class

Host agency provides the following:
The host agency will be required to provide adequate space to conduct a classroom portion of the class. This includes audiovisual equipment that will support a PowerPoint presentation, usually docking with an HDMI connection. The host agency will provide adequate space for the hands-on portion of the class. This includes at minimum a 25x25 space for a padded mat surface, generally in the engine bay. The host agency will provide an adequate number of stretchers for student participation (generally 1-2).

Student provides the following:
Students should wear appropriate station attire. Due to sanitary and safety concerns, students will be asked to remove footwear during the hands-on portion of class.

Vendor provides the following:
A Computer with HDMI capabilities and a padded mat surface.
