This 4-hour class is available for contracted delivery from MUFRTI. Contracted Price: $4000.

This course is designed to address the violent encounters commonly faced by first responders, including fire and EMS personnel. Participants will learn vital verbal de-escalation skills, effective scene safety protocols, and hands-on techniques to ensure both patient and personnel safety.

The course highlights the prevalence of violent encounters in emergency response settings and offers strategies to minimize these risks. Drawing on principles from crisis intervention, suicide prevention, and verbal judo, this training prepares responders to safely manage aggressive or threatening individuals. It includes guidance on documenting violent incidents in compliance with legal standards and applying Missouri’s self-defense laws in the field.

The course concludes with a hands-on practical session, emphasizing techniques such as maintaining safe distance, effective escape tactics, and non-violent restraint holds to ensure the safety of all parties involved.

Course Objectives:
1.  Provide Fire and EMS professionals with tactics and techniques to avoid and defend violent encounters.
2.  Protect patients from unnecessary injury
3.  Preserve scene safety
4.  Address special circumstances that may arise with psychiatric cases
5.  Verbally de-escalate a possible violent encounter
6.  Provide proper documentation tactics post-encounter situation

Host agency provides the following:
The host agency will be required to provide adequate space to conduct a classroom portion of the class. This includes audiovisual equipment that will support a PowerPoint presentation, usually docking with an HDMI connection. The host agency will provide adequate space for the hands-on portion of the class. This includes at minimum a 25x25 space for a padded mat surface, generally in the engine bay.  The host agency will provide an adequate number of stretchers for student participation (generally 1-2).

Student provides the following:
Students should wear appropriate station attire. Due to sanitary and safety concerns, students will be asked to remove footwear during the hands-on portion of class.

Vendor provides the following:
A Computer with HDMI capabilities and a padded mat surface.
