This is an 8-hour class.

Coach Up or Coach Out: The Subtle Art to Effective Leadership is a focused and practical leadership course tailored for emergency services professionals tasked with navigating complex personnel challenges. Participants will explore essential leadership theories and learn to identify key performance indicators and common obstacles in employee development. Core concepts such as coaching, counseling, mentoring, and discipline are defined and applied within the framework of ethical leadership and legal accountability.

Through guided instruction and scenario-based peer collaboration, students will practice communication techniques that build trust and foster responsible decision-making. Emphasis is placed on assessing a subordinate’s readiness for growth or transition, developing individualized Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs), and delivering feedback that supports progress or appropriate separation. The course equips leaders with actionable strategies to resolve conflict, motivate personnel, and uphold organizational standards with integrity and confidence.

Course Objectives:
1. Explain key leadership theories relevant to emergency services.
2. Identify personnel performance indicators and challenges.
3. Define the principles of coaching, counseling, mentoring, and discipline.
4. Recognize ethical and legal concerns in managing underperforming personnel.
5. Demonstrate communication techniques to foster trust, accountability, and ethical decision making.
6. Assess the readiness of a subordinate for coaching advancement (coach-up) or transition (coaching out).
7. Identify conflict resolution and motivations strategies.
8. Develop an individualized Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) and/or document failure to improve.
9. Deliver a constructive performance feedback session that supports growth or transition.
10. Through case-based scenarios, collaborate with peers to solve personnel challenges to leadership and supervision standards.
