Full Description
This course addresses the requirements for Fire Investigator found in NFPA 1033, Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Investigator, 2022 Edition.

Materials:
Students will be required to provide copies of NFPA 1033 and NFPA 921 (print or digital), current editions. Course text books will be provided by DFS. Students will also need a laptop or tablet, and writing utensils for orientation and skills.

Course Schedule:
Tuesday, October 14, 2025: In-seat orientation and NFPA standard review at DFS HQ
Monday, December 8, 2025 through Friday, December 12, 2025: In seat skills and testimony at DFS HQ

The seven weeks between orientation and skills will be hybrid learning. See the course syllabus attached in the documents section of the course for further information.

Prerequisites
Missouri Division of Fire Safety Firefighter I or Fire Inspector I certification, or completion of classes in the areas of Fire Behavior, Building Construction, and Hazardous Materials Awareness and/or Hazardous Materials for Inspectors.

A letter of recommendation for course attendance and subsequent certification is required from a chief officer, listing the applicant’s job description and length of service.
Student must have a minimum of three years’ experience in some phase of fire service, fire prevention, fire investigation or criminal investigation. Experience may be in the public or private sector.

REGISTRATION FOR THIS COURSE WILL OPEN ON AUGUST 30, 2025.

This course is NOT a first-come, first-enrolled course.  All applications are reviewed and a committee from the Division of Fire Safety's Training Unit determines final selection of attendees.

Students must hold MODFS certifications in Hazardous Materials Awareness and Firefighter I, or a certification as Inspector I, or must have completed the following courses in Fire Behavior, Building Construction, and Hazardous Materials for Fire Inspectors.
