This course is intended to teach emergency responders how to perform initial site characterization and air monitoring tasks on emergency scenes. This is a common task for fire department engine companies and other first arriving resources when responding to Carbon Monoxide alarms and other emergencies. Topics include: Discuss different types of hazardous materials detection and identification instruments; different survey techniques; advantages and disadvantages of different types of instruments; and includes hands-on practical skills using air monitoring simulators. This course also meets the objectives of NFPA 1072 2017 edition for Hazardous Materials Operations core and mission specific competencies and OSHA 2019 CFR 1910.120.

Course Objectives: Describe the steps to develop an analysis process for identifying an unknown atmosphere. Identify different types of air monitoring equipment. Describe the factors associated with the selection and use of monitoring equipment, demonstrate the proper technique to identify and quantify hazardous materials concentrations of a simulated release of hazardous materials, Demonstrate field maintenance and testing for different types of air monitoring equipment.
