This course is designed to prepare emergency response personnel with basic knowledge of shoring principals, and equipment usage to initiate rescue operations when dealing with light frame construction collapse. Topics include recognition of hazards associated with structure collapse and how to safely mitigate them, size up and scene safety, first-in officer’s responsibilities, identification of structure collapse patterns, dynamics of the collapse and secondary collapse, recognition and implementation of the FEMA Search & Rescue marking system, victim management and extrication. Students will participate in several exercises using both wood and mechanical shoring systems. This class meets NFPA 1670, Standard on Operations and Training for Technical Search and Rescue Incidents, 2017 Edition, Chapter 6.2 Awareness

Course Objectives: Recognizing the need for structural collapse search and rescue. Identify the resources necessary to conduct structural collapse search and rescue operations.  Initiate the emergency response system for structural collapse incidents. Initiate site control and scene management. Understand building construction types. Recognize the general hazards associated with structural collapse incidents, including the recognition of applicable construction types and categories and the expected behaviors of components and materials in a structural collapse. Identify the five types of collapse patterns and potential victim locations. Recognize the potential for secondary collapse. Conduct visual and verbal searches at structural collapse incidents, while using approved methods for the specific type of collapse. Recognize and implementing the FEMA Task Force Search and Rescue Marking System, Building Marking System (structure/hazard evaluation), Victim Location Marking System, and Structure Marking System (structure identification within a geographic area). Understand and construct simple wood shoring. Understand and demonstrate lifting and moving techniques
