This course is designed to prepare emergency response personnel to initiate rescue operations in nonintersecting trench and excavation emergencies of depths less than 8’. Topics include recognition of the unique hazards associated with trench or excavation emergencies and how to mitigate them with the use of proper resources, scene safety and size-up, identification of collapse patterns, reasons for collapse and potential for secondary collapse, identification of probable victim location and survivability, identification of soil types, and shielding, sloping and benching systems. Students will participate in practical exercises in a simulated trench collapse. This class meets requirements of Awareness and Operations Level, of NFPA 1670, Operations and Training for Technical Rescue Incidents, 2017 edition.

Course Objectives: Determine the considerations that make specialized rescue operations different from traditional fire and rescue work. Understand the importance of performing a proper risk-benefit analysis at the scene of every specialized rescue emergency and understand the various reasons that special operations fail. Understand the various methods that can be used to form and maintain a fully functional and effective team for trench rescue. Understand the necessity of maintaining a competent trench rescue team in your community. Understand the importance of the incident management system (IMS) and its various support functions as applied to successful trench rescue operations. Understand the role that physics and physical forces associated with soil have in trenching and excavation emergencies and determine the various factors that can lead to collapse. Describe the various types of trench collapses and why they occur. Understand how consistent standards are used to classify soil based on its potential for collapse and the methods used to test soil for classification purposes. Assemble and operate the various types of equipment and tools used in trench rescue operations. Understand the concepts that relate to the effective lifting, moving, and stabilization of objects as they apply to trench rescue operations. Summarize the steps to consider when approaching a trench rescue scene and looking for buried victims. Understand the proper use of ground pads, sheeting, and shoring for normal and specialized trench rescue operations and the traditional methods used by contractors for safe trench and excavation openings Understand the various hazard types, categories, and phases of control, including using atmospheric monitoring as a method of determining real and potential hazards that may be found at the scene of a trench rescue. Understand the proper procedures to build protective systems for most types of trench collapse emergencies.
