This 4-hour course looks at fire ignition, growth, and spread from a scientific perspective. Key discussion points include:

• The sustained chemical reaction of oxidation
• Pyrolysis and vaporization of solid and liquid fuels
• Flammable vs. Combustible liquids
• Fire plume development in a compartment fire
• Fluid mechanics of smoke, heat, and gases
• Temperature, heat, and heat flux
• Methods of heat transfer
• Exothermic energey and enthalpy
• Buoyancy, pressure, and flowpath
• Recognizing and preventing hostile fire events
• Case studies to apply these concepts to real firefighting situations

An In-depth discussion of the science of fire and its application in fire prevention, fire suppression, fire protection systems, and fire investigation. The course applies current fire science to case studies and common fireground scenarios.

NOTE: This course is not an introductory fire behavior discussion. Participants should have a working knowledge of fire behavior and some experience with fighting compartment fires.

*Understand and apply advanced principles of current fire science to prevent, suppress, and investigate fire through case studies.
*Increase fireground safety and improve fireground outcomes through situational awareness and predictive decision-making.
