This 4 hour course will explore the NIOSH Five, the root causes of them and ways in which any firefighter can create a better culture to lessen or eradicate these five issues. The fires we fight are an equal opportunity creator of chaos and will kill and/or injure any firefighter without discretion or discrimination. The fire doesn’t care. After investigating hundreds of firefighter fatalities in the United States, NIOSH (National Institute of Safety and Health) has determined the top five issues surrounding these firefighter fatalities.

Course Objectives:
Objective 1. The attendee will have a clear understanding of what the NIOSH Five are and why they are important to be addressed and recognized by the end of the session.

Objective 2. The attendee will be able to recognize the root causes of the NIOSH Five and be provided with examples which will help them develop a better understanding of why they occur on the incident scene by the end of the session.

Objective 3.  The attendee will be provided with common sense steps he/she can take to improve both personal  and departmental culture and thereby eliminate or at least minimize the issues expressed in NIOSH Five by the end of the session.
